Born to a family in poverty, they migrated to Fes, Morocco, where her father because a successful businessman and accumulated a small fortune. Both Fatima and her sister Mariam were able to attend school and earn and education, something that would later influence the path that each of them took in life. In school, Fatima studied the life of the Prophet Mohammad (SAW) and the Hadith, the words, actions and teachings of the Prophet, which serve as moral guidance for Muslims. Seeing the need for more masjids in Morocco too accommodate the growing number of refugees from Islamic Spain, Mariam used her fortune to build a mosque. Fatima built on to that mosque, a center for education, which would eventually become the oldest existing and still operating degree institution in the world - known today as University Al Quaraouiyine. When it was complete, the university offered courses in Islamic studies, mathematics, grammar and medicine, while the adjacent mosque hosted nearly 22,000 worshipers. The library at the university is also considered to be the oldest in the world and today contains 4000 manuscripts, including a 9th century Quarantine and collections of hadiths. Fatima died in 880 CE in Morocco, 24 years after her library and university began.
